Gout??!?
Yesterday I was diagnosed with gout. What the heck is up with that? I'm, like, 25 years too young to have gout, I barely ever eat red meat, and I
rarely, rarely, rarely drink alcohol. The doctors ran a blood test that should be back in a couple days, so I'm eagerly waiting to see if the test
confirms what the doc told me.
If I do have gout then I guess I'll treat it by continuing to not consume red meat or alcohol, which doesn't sound like a very good treatment. If I
don't, then I'm back to square one trying to find out why my big toe is in extreme pain.
Grrrrr.....

I don't know... like I said, it explains the pain, but the onset of it was gradual, and none of the other stuff seems right. Time will tell I guess.
It's feeling much better now, so whether it was an injury or gout or something else, the anti-inflammatory meds are helping, so that's good.

There is a whole wealth of info on the net but I think diet is important for preventing crystal formation. I remember that red meat and liver are bad.

Gout is a condition that causes episodes of pain and swelling in joints of the body, especially the big toes, insteps, ankles, heels, knees, and
wrists. Gout is caused by the formation of uric acid crystals in these joints. Uric acid is a normal byproduct of metabolism.
The body usually keeps uric acid levels in balance, but some people develop gout when the body makes too much uric acid or excretes too little.
Factors such as heredity, medications, and diet make gout more likely. Although particular foods aren't the primary cause of gout in most cases, some
people get gout attacks when they eat large quantities of foods high in a substance called purines. These foods include seafood, sweetbreads, liver,
kidney, and dried beans. Alcohol may also cause gout attacks. If you have gout, you don't need to avoid these foods altogether. But consuming them in
moderation may help prevent some gout episodes.
There are steps you can take to prevent gout episodes. Drink plenty of fluids, eat smaller amounts of protein rich foods and if you are overweight,
talk to your doctor about a weight loss plan. Weight loss can help to lower uric acid levels.
Prescription drugs are the main treatment for gout attacks. Prescription drugs are also used as prevention with people who have attacks frequently.
Nonprescription pain medicines such as naproxen (brand name Aleve) or ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) can help relieve symptoms of pain and swelling.
