Open and Unhappy Endings

I have noticed that directors are becoming braver in more recent years as more films have either open or unhappy endings. Some people really let this bother them, but they may like to watch movies for escapism. I think it can be more realistic as things don't always work out in reality.

What do you think about endings in which not everything turns out to be happy or clearly explained?
